Bluetooth old technology learns new tricks

Bluetooth technology has been around for the last 30 years and establish itself as the most known wireless connection technology.

Still it evolves and provides new solutions and use cases. Few good examples are the Audio over Bluetooth Low Energy, the lighting systems controlled by Bluetooth mesh and the support in the mobile applications that tracks covid-19.

Bluetooth history

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard used for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the industrial, scientific and medical radio bands (ISM), from 2.402 GHz to 2.480 GHz, and building personal area networks (PANs). It started as a wireless replacement for the serial port cable RS-232 and evolved to be the most common local connectivity technology.

It can be found almost anywhere, it connects mobile devices, cars, home appliances, lighting systems with imagination being the limit.

Bluetooth is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which has more than 35,000 member companies in the areas of telecommunication, computing, networking, and consumer electronics.

Bluetooth is a mature technology and an established brand. A big role to that has played the Bluetooth Qualification Process. All Bluetooth products must go through the process and be listed on the Bluetooth Product Database. This ensures the interoperability and seamless operation between Bluetooth devices. Completing the qualification process gives the member company the right to use the logo and the technology.

Using Bluetooth logo in radio devices, represent high quality and standard protocol in devices.

The qualification process

This is a so-called self-declaration process, this means the member company must provide evidence that their design complies with the specifications maintained by the Bluetooth SIG. Depending on the way a Bluetooth design is implemented, there are different option to go through the qualification process. A Bluetooth Qualification Consultant (BQC) can guide you through the different paths and help you get your qualification in the most suitable way for you.

To complete the process sometimes it is needed to do some testing, sometimes you only need to refer to ready qualified designs. In any case a unique Declaration Identification number needs to be purchased from the Bluetooth Sig and allocated to the new product.

By using Bluetooth technology solution in your product, you can take all the advantages of technology and the brand name.

If you plan to use Bluetooth technology, we can help you with the design and qualification.
